What can I expect from therapy?
What can I expect from therapy?
First off let me say that I believe that healing and resolution are possible. Therapy it not easy but when clients do the work in and out of sessions they can begin to see differences in their everyday lives. In therapy clients can feel distressing emotions such as sadness, anger and anxiety, however, client can also experience joy, happiness, and relief. It is my goal to help you process through the difficulties that bring you into therapy and help you develop and implement skills to carry with you outside of sessions. I believe that it is important that clients have a good clinical relationship with their therapist and feel comfortable. So please feel free to look at my website or ask questions about my theoretical approach, employment background and goals for therapy.
I believe that when we experience a struggle or traumatic incident it can impact a variety of aspects of our lives. Sometimes our past can begin to influence our present or our anxieties surrounding our future can inhibit us from being focused on the current moment. My goal is to provide you with a safe and nonjudgmental environment where you can gain awareness into your past and present struggles. Where together we can work on developing your inner strength, developing coping skills and new insights about your life to carry with you outside of sessions.
In my clinical work, I use a solution-focused approach integrated with various modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Imaginal Nurturing, Mindfulness techniques and several others. The modalities used vary depending upon you the client and your needs.
The session itself:
You can expect that together we will complete an initial assessment and develop treatment goals for therapy. Sometimes I take notes in session, provide you with homework to be completed outside of sessions and will even encourage you to take notes or journal things that come up between sessions. It is important the between session you practice and implement the new skills that we have developed together.
It is important to remember that therapy takes time. There are no immediate cures or magic pills. Many of my clients see me for several months on a weekly or bi-monthly basis depending upon their needs. Like I have already mentioned it is not easy work but it is a space for you to get support and develop a new way of looking at the problems that are bothering you. I believe that everyone is capable of doing this work and I look forward to working with you.
